Heritage of pearls

If we start at the beginning, pearls have been treasured since way back when with the earliest recorded mention of them recorded around 2206 BC in China. The Romans were particularly fond of pearls, with Julius Caesar and Cleopatra being known admirers. During the European Renaissance in the 16th century, they became very popular amongst royalists and you will notice Queen Elizabeth wore them in many of her portraits. Pearls then became closely linked to the fashion world, with Coco Chanel revolutionising the game, by adding pearls to her designs. She was a lover of pearls herself and often wore strands draped around her neck. Other women known for their iconic style, such as Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn all wore pearls in and outside of the public eye. We can all agree, that Princess Diana’s iconic four-strand pearl necklace will forever be one of the most breathtaking looks of all time.

Why are pearls so popular?

When we try to summarise why the pearls are so popular, it boils down to the fact you can’t get a more timeless and classic accessory. They never go out of style! From the Y2K trend with baby tees and low-rise jeans to silent luxury with classic tailoring and neutral colour palettes, pearls are at the centre of it all.

Designers are also feeding our addiction with brands such as Shrimps, Sophia Webster and Vivienne Westwood all heavily incorporating pearls within their designs. You couldn't miss the Shrimps box bag and the Vivienne Westwood choker seen across all media. How to clean and care for your pearls?

Before we move on to our top five pieces this season, we want you to know how to care for your pearls. It is essential to maintain their lustre and longevity. Here are some tips...  #1 Avoid Contact with Chemicals and Acids:Pearls are sensitive to chemicals and acids found in everyday products like perfumes, hairsprays, and cosmetics. Always apply these products before putting on your pearls.

#2 Put Pearls On Last and Take Them Off First:

This helps minimize exposure to substances that may harm the pearls.

#3 Wipe with a Soft Cloth:

After wearing, wipe the pearls with a clean, soft, and slightly damp cloth. This will help remove any traces of oils or sweat.

#4 Use Mild Soaps for Cleaning:

If your pearls need more than a gentle wipe, use a mild soap solution. Mix a few drops of mild, non-detergent soap (like Ivory or a specialized pearl soap) with warm water. Dampen a clean, soft cloth or cotton ball and gently wipe the pearls. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth and pat dry.

#5 Avoid Immersion in Water:

Do not soak pearls in water for extended periods. Excessive exposure to water can weaken the silk thread and affect the lustre of the pearls.

#6 Restringing:

If you wear your pearls frequently, it's recommended to have them restrung every few years by a professional. This helps prevent breakage and ensures the thread remains strong and secure.

#7 Store Separately:

Store pearls away from other jewellery, as they can easily be scratched by harder gemstones. Consider storing them in a soft pouch or wrapped in a soft cloth.

#8 Avoid Extreme Temperatures:

Pearls can be sensitive to extreme temperatures. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight, near heaters, or in very cold environments.

#9 Wear Regularly:

Pearls benefit from being worn as the natural oils from your skin help maintain their lustre. If left unworn for extended periods, they may become dull.

#10 Professional Cleaning:

If your pearls become heavily soiled or lose their lustre, consider taking them to a professional jeweller for a thorough cleaning.

#11 Be Gentle:

Treat your pearls with care. Avoid dropping them or subjecting them to rough treatment.
